Dear St. Francis Xavier Parents,

Summer vacation time will soon be over and many of you are already thinking about "Back-to-School" time. It is also time for our parish Religious Education Program to be restarting soon. Pre-K (must be age 4 by September 1,2012) through Grade 12 at St. Francis Xavier will begin on Sunday, September 9. Class time begins following the 8:00 a.m. Mass and ends at 10:15 a.m.

I hope that each family has had a good summer and that prayer and weekend Eucharistic celebration have been an important part of your summer. I know for some of you Totus Tuus was a part of your summer and we had a wonderful week of prayer and learning and being together.

In the Catechism of the Catholic Church we are reminded that "parents are the principal and first educators of their children." (CCC1653) We also read that "through the grace of the sacrament of marriage, parents receive the responsibility and privilege of evangelizing their children. Parents should initiate their children at an early age into the mysteries of the faith of which they are the 'first heralds' for their children. They should associate them from their tenderest years with the life of the Church. A wholesome family life can foster interior dispositions that are a genuine preparation for a living faith and remain a support for it throughout one's life." (CCC 2225) "Education in the faith by the parents should begin in the child's earliest years. This already happens when family members help one another to grow in faith by the witness of a Christian life in keeping with the Gospel. Family catechesis precedes, accompanies, and enriches other forms of instruction in the faith. (emphasis added) Parents have the mission of teaching their children to pray and to discover their vocation as children of God. The parish is the Eucharistic community and the heart of the liturgical life of Christian families; it is a privileged place for the catechesis of children and parents." (CCC 2226)

Please note the emphasized sentence above. The family is the first place where children are catechized in our holy Catholic faith. The parish provides a Religious Education program to assist families in the faith instruction of their children. The parish program supports the family in the faith formation of their children. The children should learn how to pray and learn their prayers at home. Prayers will be practiced and prayed at Religious Education, but they are learned at home. Each family will receive a booklet of prayers that your children are to learn and the grade levels when they should be known. These booklets will be sent home during the first month of Religious Education.

On the Religious Ed link above you will find the registration forms for the Religious Education Program. Please complete these and return them to the Religious Education Office. You may return them in the collection basket at a weekend Mass (please mark the envelop with Barbara's name), bring them to the office, or mail them. To help with the planning and ordering of books and supplies for this new year, please return your forms by August 19, 2012.

There is also a need for catechists and office help at each parish. If God is calling you to this ministry, please contact Barbara to offer your help. Phone numbers are listed above.

May God continue to bless each of our families and our catechists as we work and pray to form our children in our holy Catholic faith.
