For several years now, preparation for Confirmation has been a two year program with formation being done in the seventh and eighth grade. In the seventh grade the students continue learning about the beliefs of the Catholic faith and how those beliefs can and should be lived out in our daily lives. Eighth graders look back at the history of the Catholic Church and have their immediate preparation and formation to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in the fall of their ninth grade year.
Those students entering seventh grade this year will begin their two year formation. Attendance of 85% is required for the seventh grade year. Those students entering eighth grade will complete their formation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Attendance of 90% is required for the eighth grade year. Those students entering ninth grade will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in the fall. (This year's date is Wednesday, October 24, 2012, at 7:00 p.m.) Attendance at any Confirmation class sessions and at Youth Group meetings is required in the weeks before Confirmation. Each of these years of formation has certain requirements for the students to complete. These requirements will be presented at a parent meeting early in the year.
It has long been implied, although not specifically stated, that formation for First Communion is also a two year program. This year's first graders, in order to receive First Communion at the end of the second grade, are expected to be present for 85% of classes as a first grader. The lessons taught and the formation that happens in the first grade is foundational for the lessons and formation that happens in the second grade as the students are prepared for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the fall and for the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist in the spring.
If you have a child in first grade this year (2012-2013) he or she will need to be attending religious education class this year to be prepared for the second grade program next year.
If your child is in second grade this year (2012-2013) and did not attend on a regular basis as a first grader last year, they will be prepared for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist this year. However, it is possible that they may need to do some make-up work at home if there are gaps in their foundational information. Attendance of 90% is required for the second grade year.
